Heard of the Uttarakhand Millet Mission?
The Uttarakhand Millet Mission was officially approved in 2023 with a strong focus on reviving traditional grains like Jhangora and Manduwa. By encouraging the cultivation of these nutrient-rich millets, the initiative aims to promote sustainable agriculture while ensuring a healthier future for communities.
Beyond nutrition, this mission is also about empowerment, providing Pahadi farmers and women of Uttarakhand with better opportunities, fair support and a stronger connection to their agricultural heritage.
Other Government Initiatives
Uttarakhand government is working towards providing an 80% subsidy on the millet seeds. The subsidy for other crops seed in this state is only 50%. The Pahadi Millet Mission will be operational from 2023-24 to 2027-28.
The government has also started MSP (Minimum Support Price) to motivate the farmers to grow millet.
Online payment education is provided to the farmers who are selling millet to the government to be distributed through the public distribution system. It is soon going to be compulsorily added to the mid-day meal programme. The practice has already been initiated in many parts of Uttarakhand.
Farmers are feeling motivated to grow millet after earning more by growing these grains.
Uttarakhand state has provided a budget of 73 crores to support the millet mission in Uttarakhand.
A book, titled " Swad Ke Saath Swasthya," has been launched by the government to educate the public about the nutritional value of millet.The production of millet is expected to double this year.
